Get Undergraduate Degree
The first step to becoming a lawyer in California is to earn your undergraduate degree. To attend law school, you must first earn your bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
There is no set major that you must complete when getting into law school, but many students choose to study subjects such as political science, history, or English. If you’re not sure what you want to major in, that’s okay. There is always someone to point you in the right direction!
If you complete your undergraduate degree requirements, you’ll be eligible to apply to law school.
Finish Law School
The second step is to complete your law school education. After earning your undergraduate degree, you’ll need to attend an accredited law school and complete your Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
During your time in law school, you’ll take part in courses such as property law, constitutional law, civil procedure, and contracts. You will also have the opportunity to participate in clinical programs and externships, which can give you hands-on experience working with clients and legal professionals. Upon completion of your JD degree, you will be eligible to take the California Bar Exam.
Pass Bar Exam
The third step is to pass the bar exam and become licensed. The California Bar Exam is a two-day exam that tests your knowledge of specific areas of California law.
To pass the exam, you must complete all sections within the allotted time and earn a score of at least 1440 out of 2000 possible points. Once you pass the exam, you will be sworn in as a licensed lawyer by the California State Bar and can begin practicing law in the state of California!
